Book Review: Take a chance on me

Take a chance on me was written by Jill Mansell, the setting of the book is in England in a small town, the Channing hills. It is a story based on a lady who thinks that she is unlucky in love. Mansell names this character Cleo. Cleo’s inability to find a man she can call her prince charming is theb forced to interact with the man who tormented her childhood, Johnny Laventure, who is now a famous sculptor. These interactions with him make Cleo wonder if Johnny has somehow changed over the years.

Ash is Cleo’s best friend who agrees on a pact to get married to Cleo if they are both unattached in the next five years. This becomes a comforting feeling for Cleo because she has something to fall back on.

Mansell shows how even though Ash’s role is not to act as a primary character brings more action than the role played by Cleo. Ash helps the story and assists Cleo’s character by being a good friend. He is a radio presenter who has a lot of confidence on air but is not brave enough to show affection in close interactions including the woman he is inlove with.

Cleo is also very close to her sister Abbie, who is having marital problems and who battles with infertility and desperation to have children. When her husband’s child locates her father, Abbie’s need for children grows. Cleo is not aware of her sister’s problems, she envy’s her sister’s life and stability with her husband.

Take a chance on me is a book that shows Mansell’s skill to combine romantic comedy and serious social and personal challenges that include infertility, modern fertility innovations, bullying and adultery. Mansell creates humor, although the book is predictable, it is a good read because it is not loaded with too much information.
